Resumo
A intervenção de profissionais de diferentes áreas é necessária para a avaliação e o tratamento efetivos de indivíduos que sofrem por disfunção sexual. O paradigma atual preconiza o modelo biopsicossocial para a compreensão e o tratamento dessas queixas. Contando com mais de cinco décadas, desde o seu advento, a terapia sexual permanece viva e incorpora à sua prática importantes achados recentes da Psicologia e da Medicina. O planejamento terapêutico deve ser elaborado após elucidação de fatores predisponentes, precipitadores e mantenedores do problema. Apesar de apresentar e publicar resultados promissores, as intervenções psicoterápicas para as disfunções sexuais devem ser mais estudadas a fim de preencherem os requisitos de uma prática baseada em evidências. O sucesso da terapia sexual não se mensura a partir da frequência sexual ou das mudanças no tempo de latência ejaculatória e da rigidez peniana. Mais do que resgatar a função sexual, interessa conseguir a minimização/supressão do sofrimento, o prazer e a satisfação sexual do paciente.
